The woman accused of shooting and killing a mail carrier last week in a southwest Longmont neighborhood was charged with first-degree murder Tuesday morning. A Jan. 10 preliminary hearing was also scheduled for 26-year-old Devan Rebecca Schreiner.

Schreiner allegedly shot her former boyfriend 33-year-old Jason Schaefer shortly after noon on Oct. 13 while he was delivering mail. The two had been in a visitation dispute over the couple’s son, according to court documents.

Boulder District Judge Thomas Mulvahill advised Schreiner of her rights Tuesday morning and told her she is not eligible for bond until a hearing can be held.

Schreiner waived her right to a preliminary hearing within 35 days of the filing of the charges, Schreiner’s attorney — Jennifer Englemann — told Mulvahill. Englemann also told Mulvahill that given the severity of the murder charge, she may ask for a continuance in the case.

Schreiner appeared in court surrounded by Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies with a green protective suit over her jail uniform. Members of Schaefer’s family were in attendance at Tuesday’s brief hearing but declined to comment.

Schaefer was placing mail in a standing postal box near Heatherhill Street and Renaissance Drive Oct. 13 about 12:30 p.m. when Schreiner approached him and shot multiple times, Longmont Police said.

Police learned Schaefer and Schreiner have a child together and Schaefer had filed documents with the courts to have parenting time modified, according to an arrest affidavit.

Schreiner had been fired from her job at the post office in Longmont over a dispute with Schaefer two weeks before the shooting, the affidavit states. She was later hired by the Loveland post office.
