New Longmont nonprofit taking a pet-friendly approach to serving the homeless

Annie & Millie’s Place — dedicated to providing services to people experiencing homelessness and their pets — is a labor of love for Kristen Baltrum. Baltrum’s sister and half of her nonprofit’s namesake, Annie, committed suicide in July 2019 while she was homeless. Millie was Annie’s dog, with her to the end.

Colorado needs more skilled workers. But the state provides little help to adults trying to earn a college degree

Training in Colorado can be hard to find, colleges don’t provide adequate support for students with jobs and families, and programs tailored to older students are limited. As a result, a wide swath of Coloradans can’t access well-paying jobs to provide for their families, and employers can’t find workers with the skills needed for specialized jobs.

Longmont continues to seek ways to help RV dwellers after new ordinance bars them from parking on city streets

Many RV inhabitants said they cannot afford more conventional housing and need their RVs for shelter while they work full-time jobs. In response, the city and Boulder County are spending $456,000 in one-time funds to help homeless individuals or RV users who want traditional housing, according to a city staff report.  The funding includes $25,000 for “bridge housing” — nightly motel stays or other temporary housing for RV users looking for standard housing.

The proposed legislation announced Thursday at a press conference with state lawmakers and immigrant rights groups, is a response to emails obtained through an open records request by the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition which revealed "unsanctioned data sharing" between the state's Division of Motor Vehicles and ICE agents.
