Later this month, a set of 30 PBuzz instruments will be delivered to Mead Elementary School. The lightweight, plastic instruments are designed for younger musicians as an introduction to brass instruments and the skill of buzzing into a mouthpiece.

On Friday, after giving initial approval to a bill to phase in higher local tax rates over 19 years, senators took the unusual step of sending what’s called an interrogatory seeking the opinion of the state’s highest court.

Pressure on the CDC has come from advocates and some experts who argue that any benefit of the 6-foot requirement is far outweighed by the resulting downsides of remote instruction for students. Pressure is already coming from the other side, too, with a prominent teachers union leader warning against revamping the guidance.

“The point of this (session) is to talk to families to say, ‘Here is what the voters approved in November’ and ask ‘How should it look for it to be the most supportive for you?,’” said Melissa Mares, event facilitator and early childhood policy fellow at the Colorado Children’s Campaign.

Under current law, school districts must allow parents and caregivers to possess and administer cannabis-based medicine on school grounds. School principals have discretion whether to allow school personnel to posses and administer medicine on school grounds. The new bill would remove that discretion.

Rather than administer the suite of standardized tests that students typically take, Colorado education officials will seek a waiver from federal testing requirements. If successful, there will be no science or social studies tests, and students would take either a math or a literacy test, but not both. The tests won’t be used to evaluate teacher performance or rate schools. 

Colorado schools are funded based on enrollment. The legislation approved by Polis ensures Colorado school districts will receive the money they originally expected for the 2020-21 school year despite about 30,000 fewer students showing up, a 3.3% decline in enrollment. 

“Since we can’t take a field trip, we thought we would bring a field trip to them,” third grade teacher Kelly Dodds said.
