Locally, car thefts were up about 30% from July to November, according to Longmont Police Sgt. Matt Cage, who said a car thief was arrested Monday night and another was arrested on Sunday.

Police were called about 12:30 a.m. after residents heard gunshots, which also were heard by an officer on patrol nearby in the area of East Fifth Avenue and Morgan Street, according to an arrest affidavit.

Edward Herbert Hoid, 36, was arrested shortly after 1 a.m. Friday. He has been charged with a parole violation, menacing, criminal mischief and three counts of vehicle trespass in connection with events that led to his arrest. He has not yet been charged in connection with the assault, according to police.
