Have you ever wondered what a school board does? Today marks the fifth installment of an eight-part series focused on what the St. Vrain Valley board does and getting to know its members. 

“If you fear for your family’s health, it is not required that you take your children to school to take the test since this year the ACCESS test is voluntary,” Lucinda Soltero-Gonzalez tells families in a Spanish public service announcement airing on local Spanish-language radio and television. 

The changes were highlighted during Wednesday’s school board meeting, at which the district’s annual report required by the Colorado Safe Schools Act was discussed. The report summarizes the district’s safety and security activities from July 1, 2019, to June 30. 

Over the past 10 years, SVVSD graduation rates have increased by 13.8% for all students and 30.4 % for Hispanic students, said Ann Reed, the district’s executive director of assessment.

Lawmakers return to the Capitol on Wednesday to officially start the new session, but they will delay most of their work until at least mid-February, when they hope COVID rates will be lower and more people will have been vaccinated. They will take up issues including standardized testing, learning loss, funding for K-12 and higher education, and school discipline.

The hope is that by identifying positive cases more quickly, those people can isolate before they expose many others. That would reduce the number of people who have to quarantine, as well as reduce the risk of transmission.
