School officials are concerned that more students will join virtual academy if COVID-19 cases rise.

“To be honest it was pretty weird at the start but once we got on the field and started warming up it felt just like it was last year,” Skyline junior Nick Peterson said. “The empty stands were a little weird.”

Elsewhere in Longmont, an individual at St. John the Baptist Catholic School has tested positive for the COVID-19 and students in classrooms who were in close contact with the individual were quarantined for 14 days.

In the past five years, the district has seen a 92% increase in Hispanic students taking AP exams, along with a 52% increase among white students and a 50% increase among Black students. Graduation rates also have improved for students in historically marginalized groups.

Those with close contact to the student are being asked to quarantine and the school has undergone a deep sanitization and cleaning, according to a letter to parents from Principal Matt Buchler.

In Colorado, at least for the foreseeable future, the privately administered SAT isn’t going anywhere, despite longstanding criticisms that it hurts the prospects of low-income students of color. However, the unusual circumstances this year can allow Colorado’s college leaders and policy makers an opportunity to reflect on the use of the test, especially for admissions.

“What I saw yesterday were very enthusiastic children, very happy teachers. Some teachers cried with happiness as if a small ray of sunshine had come into the school. It was a very beautiful experience.”

The Raptors (14-2, 9-0) are seeded sixth in the 15-team bracket and will play No. 11 Pueblo Central (11-5, 9-1) at 3:30 p.m. A win could set up an NCAC title rematch with Holy Family.
